I’d like to start off by saying I am fully aware that it has been almost a month since I have written anything worthwhile and original. As some of you may know, I recently had LASIK surgery, and as a result my eyes were extremely sore whenever I starred at a computer screen. While my eyes are not 100% yet they are remarkably better. I’m still holding a high level of optimism that upon my eyes completely healing I will have near 20/20 vision. In addition to my eye surgery Celia and I were greeted for the first time with visitors last Friday. My Grandma and Grandpa made the overseas odyssey to spend 10 days with us. My Grandma also requested I say that she’s bothering me so I will go on the record by saying, “Grandma stop it! You’re bothering me!” I’m such a good grandson. Getting back on track now.
There has been a lot going on recently that has prevented me from actually writing something. The one benefit I noticed from not writing for about one month was the abundance of ideas that came to me. I probably have a good five ideas floating around my head right now. What I’m going to do this evening, to gradually ease myself back into the writing process, is write something a little shorter but something that will be fun nonetheless.
This idea came to me over the course of time. There have been many random things that I like but nothing worth devoting an entire blog too. So in an unprecedented move for me, I’m going to give a variety of Top 5’s that have come to me over time.
TOP 5 SONGS I DON’T ADMIT TO LIKING
The best way this list can be described would come from a scene in Tommy Boy. How many of you remember the scene when Chris Farley and David Spade are driving in the car and a song comes on that both of them like but both of them don’t want to admit it? It was an awkward moment for the two of them but deep down every guy has a song or two they secretly like but would never tell their buddies about. These are songs that I want to put on a CD but am too scared to. Now without any further explanation, my Top 5.
5. Madonna - Like a Prayer. Remember that song? This was a song that I would sing in the car all the time. Speaking of singing in the car, has anybody ever noticed that the louder the volume is the better of a singer you become? The louder Like a Prayer was played the more I sounded like Madonna.
4. Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On. While I’m at, I love the Titanic. There, I said it. I’m 28 years old, I’m married with two children, and am employed by the Army. But damn it if I don’t love that movie!
3. Pink – Just Like a Pill. There are a number of Pink’s songs that could have been slotted here.
2. Tina Turner – I Don’t Want To Fight
1. Cher – If I Could Turn Back Time. I like that song so much I could put it on my Zune to go to the gym. I’d knock out some squats and pull ups while releasing unprecedented levels of testosterone behind the encouragement of the greatest female performing artist of the 20th century.
TOP 5 SONGS I STILL LIKE OVER TIME
There isn’t anything too humorous about this list. This is simply a list of songs I can still listen too that have withstood the test of time. By the test of time I’m mostly referring to my high school days as you can plainly see by the list below.
5. Counting Crows – Mr. Jones.
4. Rage Against the Machine – Guerilla Radio. I remember one day when I was in Iraq, just before I was to return home, and I was running on the treadmill. This song came on sent me into another dimension. Volume was increased as was the speed. I then entered a temporary state of hypnosis while restarting the song approximately 5 times.
3. Local H – Bound to the Floor. I loved this song from the first time I heard it and do not know how anybody could not love it.
2. Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm. I can understand how some people may not like this song but I love it. Something about it catches me and really gets my mind going making it almost impossible to listen to it just once.
1. Foo Fighters – Everlong. No explanation needed, at least to me.
TOP 5 FOOTBALL GAMES
I have watched football for as long as I can remember. I love watching it and could spend the entire weekend devoted to football. Follow the weekend up with a week’s worth of reading articles on ESPN and updating my Fantasy Football Team. While I’m talking football I think now is an appropriate time to say that Troy Davis, the only running back in college football to produce back-to-back 2,000 yard seasons, is the greatest college back of all time. Oh, and did you know he went to Iowa State? Speaking of Iowa State, last week they knocked off perennial powerhouse Kent State, on the road, en route to a BCS championship season. It’s been long overdue but I am confident this is our year. Oh how that last sentence was laced with an abundance of sarcasm.
5. 1997 Nebraska vs. Missouri. This was the shootout that ended with Nebraska winning in overtime after one of the most amazing plays ever. Nebraska was facing fourth and goal as the pass attempt hit just about every player on the field and then got kicked up in the air to a diving Nebraska player. I was only a teenager but remember that game like it was yesterday. Check it out.
4. 1996 Knoxville vs. PCM. Who could forget this game? This was the game where PCM trailed the mighty Panthers from Knoxville 14-7 with only a few minutes remaining. PCM drove the length of the field reaching approximately the 10 yard line with one play remaining. Joe Kain connected with his younger brother, Matt Kain, just short of the end zone. Matt, however, got by his defender making it into the end zone with no time remaining on the clock. Still down by one point with the PAT looming PCM ran a fake PAT converting the 2 point conversion to stun Knoxville and their fans. I should also note this game was listed in the TOP 5 Football games by 72% of all Knoxville, IA residents.
3. Super Bowl 25, Bills vs. Giants. This is the first Super Bowl I remember watching and it is still, I believe, the best Super Bowl ever played. The New York Giants completely dominated the game. They had possession of the ball for roughly 2/3 of the game but yet they still almost lost. The end of this game was the beginning of a four year hex on the Buffalo Bills as Scott Norwood became a Buffalo legend by missing a 49 yard field goal to win the game.
2. 2002 Florida State vs. Iowa State. I viewed this game while I was at the Apple River in Wisconsin so forgive me on the sketchy details. This game should have been a blow out and initially looked like it was headed in that direction. I believe Florida State was ranked #3 in the country while Iowa State was unranked. Florida State built up a huge lead in the first half but Iowa State was led by Seneca Wallace as they mounted an incredible 2nd half comeback. With only seconds remaining in the game and Iowa State trailing by 7 points, Seneca Wallace ran down the sideline and dove for the end zone. It appeared on T.V. that Wallace had scored, the fans in attendance thought he scored, and even Bobby Bowden, Florida State’s coach, thought he scored. Iowa State’s coach Dan McCarney, had already decided the Cones would be going for 2 points and the victory. Unfortunately, the refs called Seneca out of bounds just inches shy of the goal line. Even though Iowa State lost this game, it was the best Iowa State game I have ever seen.
1. 1994 Colfax Mingo 7th Grade vs PCM 7th Grade. Was there ever any question? This game was the defining moment in my life and, as Celia can testify too, the best moment in my life.
I hope you all enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. I should have something new to read very shortly, as the Iraqi’s would say, “Enshallah” which means God Willing.
